In a groundbreaking step toward inclusive development and clean energy adoption, Women Environmental Programme (WEP), in partnership with Christian Aid and the Renewable Energy Revolution Institute (RERI), has launched a specialized training initiative in Kaduna, Nigeria. This program focuses on equipping women and persons with disabilities with practical skills in solar panel and inverter installation and maintenance—a critical move toward sustainable energy access and economic empowerment.
As Nigeria continues its transition toward renewable energy, it is essential that no group is left behind. This initiative ensures that marginalized communities not only benefit from clean energy but are also active participants in building and maintaining the infrastructure. The training is designed to break barriers in the traditionally male-dominated renewable energy sector by providing hands-on technical education, mentorship, and job readiness for underrepresented groups.
Beyond the technical training, the program fosters financial inclusion and employment opportunities in green energy, empowering participants to become solar technicians, entrepreneurs, or energy advocates in their local communities. The ripple effect is profound—participants gain the confidence and tools to contribute meaningfully to climate action, community development, and gender equality.
This collaboration between WEP, Christian Aid, and RERI serves as a model for what inclusive climate solutions can look like. By addressing both environmental sustainability and social equity, it contributes directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 5 (Gender Equality), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and 10 (Reduced Inequality).
